I hope all you Brits rooted for Chorley man (Eccleston actually).

Bradley Wiggins to win ‘Le Tour de France.

I followed the superb coverage on ITV 4.  I am always amazed at how the cyclists can endure 4 hours (sometimes 6 hours) of physical torture every day just to get over the finishing line.

He is the first ‘Brit’  to win the Tour. He was the first to admit that he could not have done it without the backing of his SKY team and he will be getting my vote in the upcoming ‘Sports Personality of the Yeartho’ I think Mo Farah will run him close after his superb ‘double’ by winning both the 10,000 metres and 5,000 metres gold medals.

We at http://www.myteamshirts.co.uk would like to present him with one of our unique ‘Liverpool’ football shirts and also a ‘Wigan WarriorsRugby League shirt if we can contact him in between his undoubtedly busy schedule.

The London 2012 Olympics have just finished and Bradley won Gold in the ‘time trial’ and team GB came 3rd in the medals table with 29 golds, 17 silver and 19 bronze medals, a total of 65 medals, which is the highest tally since 1908.

Geography and P.E teacher Stuart Stokes at Holy Cross High School, Chorley represented GB in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the Olympic games. He was the only Olympian in the squad ‘to my knowledge’ to have a full-time job as well as having had to train and then gain a qualifying time, which he did in Brussels and then again in Spain within 10 days of each other. How many of us ‘mere mortals’ could be training at 4.30 each morning, 7 days per week and then do a full days work afterwards?  Stuart failed to win a medal but nonetheless he qualified for the games and will be all the better for the once in a lifetime experience.

Well done Stuart (Teach,Sir). I’m sure your pupils are proud of you and so is Chorley.

Samantha Murray from Clitheroe won a ‘silver medal’ in the ‘Modern Pentathlon‘ which consists of  fencing (in a round robin competition)  against 35 individual opponents, show jumping on an unfamiliar horse which is drawn from a pool of horses and only has 20 minutes to get used to it, swimming (200 metres) and running 3 x 1000 metres laps including  3 rounds of pistol shooting and hitting 5 targets x 3 (15 targets).

After the show jumping she was in 4th place and the crowd urged her on to a silver medal.

Lets hope that the ‘legacy‘ from the Olympics is not forgotten, but encourages the younger generation to take up a sport and follow in the footsteps of the present generation of sports people and who knows we could have more success in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic games?

As Samantha said in her interview ” I’m just an ordinary girl. If I can do it then any of you can do it too”

Congratulations to all who participated and also to the ‘volunteers’ and background staff who kept the wheels turning. The public encouragement made it possible for the athletes to go the extra yard/inch and carry them on the  crest of a wave.

Anyway that’s it for now so take care and look after each other.
